On Thursday the IPFW boys basketball team had their first home basketball game!  Basketball is a big thing in my home town, so I had to go to the game!  It was great.  We had floor seats because we are students and there were a lot of students there so the enthusisiam was up!  Everyone was cheering and getting involved in the game.  It made me feel a little bit like being at home.   Although IPFW lost, it was still a good game.  The ROTC group from IPFW had a obstacle course set up behind where we were sitting.  It was fun to go through that and race each other.   All in all it was a fun game, and even though they lost, I will continue to go to the games and support the team! GO ‘DONS!!

Last week was homecoming week.  During the week there were several events taking place on and off campus to celebrate homecoming.  One even that I attended was the Homecoming Pre Game party.  There was tons of free food, games, and prizes.  After you ate your food, you got to walk around and play little games so you could win fake Mastadon money.  The more money you won, the more money you had for the auction at the end of the night.  After playing games and listening to people speak, it was time for the auction.  They started the bidding at ridicoulous prices, so I didn’t get to bid on anything, but it was fun anyway!  It was kind of like a pre pep game rally for the team, because the coaches and band was there.  It was a great time!

A week or so ago, we watched the movie Freedom Writers during class.  We ate pizza and watched the movie and it was a fun time.  I really enjoyed the movie.  My favorite part was probably when they got the lady that saved Anne Frank to come to their school.  I thought it was awesome that they had the power, if they put their mind to something, to get the job done.  They didn’t want to settle for just reading about it, they wanted to learn first hand from the lady that lived through it.  I thought the movie had great morals to it.  Your background or home life does not have to hold you back from doing well in school!  As long as you have someone who supports you and you work hard at your goals you can accomplish anything.  I would recommend everyone to watch the movie, espeically teachers or any kind.  The pizza was delicious too!

Earlier this year, we got out of class early to go to the majors fair!  The majors fair was full of information on the various majors offered here at IPFW.  There was also free food available, if thats what you want to call it, just pretzels and mini candy bars.  I thought the majors fair was very useful because it showed us the different majors available if we choose to venture into a different major.  At the majors fair, I took a test that showed how much of a procrastinator I am.  I procrastinate a lot according to the test, and I’ll admit, I do tend to procrastinate too much!  I think the majors fair is a good idea and should be offered each year.

Last Thursday I went to this thing in Kettler. It was for smokers who are wanting to quit. It had all this information on pills you can take to help you quit and ways you can quit without medicine. There were free stop smoking kits with toothpaste and stuff in them too. I was interested in the medicine called Chantix which helps you stop smoking, but I found out that my insurance company does not cover it at all. I was kind of irritated because the guy who gave me the information on it said that PHP covered it in full. This irritated me because just a few months ago we switched our insurance company. We used to have PHP. I guess I will just have to figure it out on my own or maybe get the patch, but I thought it was neat that campus provided us with information and tools to stop smoking without making us feel judged.

Last week, I attended the Homecoming basketball game. IPFW played Valparaiso in a good game at the Memorial Coliseum. Unfortunately the Don’s lost the game 74 to 64. However, that didn’t ruin any of the fun. I met up with some friends from our Learning Community and I am happy that I was able to go the game.

Watching the game brought memories back of High School basketball games. We used to sit there with all our friends and have a good time. Homecoming was always a big deal in High School, as it was here this week. I especially loved all the Homecoming festivities including the free food every day.

Hopefully I will be able to attend more athletic events here at the university. We seem to have some good teams so I am looking forward to watching college sports in the future.

This semester our Speech class watched the movie Freedom Writers. This was about a group of kids who grew up living a hard life. A teacher had great courage to help these kids not only succeed in school, but graduate. This story demonstrates great leadership by the teacher and how kids can truly learn to not only get along, but become friends regardless of their culture.

This movie seemed to reveal a different life then what I am used to. It truly made me realize how lucky I am to have such great friends and a family who cares about me. This movie was like one I have never seen before because this type of movie was based on a true story. This was not a made up story but these were in fact true individuals who learned to get along.

Hearing what some of those kid’s had to go through was a reality check for me. I am happy that I had the opportunity to watch this movie. Seeing the transformation in these kids gave me hope that someday we can all look past race or culture and get along. I hope that someday I demonstrate the same kind of courage that the teacher demonstrated. It is individuals like these that we should all strive to be.

This semester during our English class, we took a visit to the Writing Center. I never heard of the Writing Center before and so I didn’t have any idea what it was before we went there. I found out that the Writing Center can be a very useful place. They give ideas about writing papers and help you with your organization.

In our business class, we were required to go to the Writing Center for a project. I decided that I would use one of my English papers and see if they could help me out. I found out that I did have many problems in my paper and they really did help me out. They gave me different ideas that I didn’t think of and this proved to be a very helpful experience.

I am happy that IPFW offers these types of programs. I feel that IPFW gives us the opportunity to succeed. It is just up to us students to use these programs for our benefit. I am glad to now know what the writing center is used for and that I must take advantage of these opportunities because they will only help me to achieve the best grade possible.

This semester I am taking a Calculus class. This class has proved to be very challenging at times. I have found that the only way I am going to be able to receive a good grade is if I do all my homework. I also go to S.I. for that class which has proved to be very helpful for me

On Wednesday’s and Friday’s, our teacher gives us the opportunity for some help. S.I is a program where a person comes in and answers questions or helps us prepare for the next test. We also get extra credit for going to the S.I. class. I have also gotten to know some of my fellow classmates pretty well. We all seem to get along and we seem to have a good time.

S.I. is a good program that I would encourage all students to attend. I know there is no way that I could have gotten through this class without the help of others. Calculus can be a very difficult course and I am thankful that IPFW has this type of program.
